Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix Movie Premiere

24 hours, a downpour and a treat

I had come to London to accomplish two things. Trying a second Harry Potter premiere and to prove you can enjoy yourself despite thousands of people and to watch In Celebration, the play which also stars Orlando Bloom.

On Monday July 2nd at 4pm I decided to check out the situation at Leicester Square, have a look around how the setup might be only to come back the next morning at 6 am. Boy, was I wrong with the timing. At 4.30 pm already quite a few fans had gathered and thus I decided to stay the night to ensure a good spot for the premiere.

As with the last Harry Potter Premiere there was already a setup in the small Park in the middle of Leicester Square and the already gathered fans parted into two groups. One that wanted to be let into the park the next day and one that stayed at the Odeon cinema entrance. I belonged to the latter group and a wise decision it was. During the night several downpours occurred leaving most of the fans wet and freezing. Being at the Odeon entrance we actually had a roof to take cover under.

Now, usually the officials, actors and tourists think we are all mad. But let me tell you this is quite a true bonding experience. You share tales with fellow fans, you share food and beverages and together you try to kill time. You also get to meet people from all over the world. In our group we had people from Brazil, France, Austria, Germany even Mauritius (okay Patrick lives in the UK but anyhow). You make friendships and know that you are among people with common interests. Very nice!

The following day the premiere should start at around 5 pm, which it indeed did. Five minutes into it a black cloud had formed worthy of being in any of the Harry Potter films. A cloud so black and strangely shaped you got a feeling death eaters would soon arrive on the premise. Well, it weren’t death eaters but a downpour from hell came down, then thunder. A loudly gawwwwddd was yelled in unison. The entire day it had been dry and just when the premiere started this had to happen. Luckily after 10 to 15 minutes it was all over. We were drenched (hey, to protect cameras and pictures are lot more important) from head to tow but the mood was still exciting.

Many of the Alan Rickman signs had also survived and although most of the older cast didn’t come it was still a great premiere. J. K. Rowling, Tom Felton, Imelda Staunton, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as well as a ton more of cast were all game to sign autographs despite the wetness surrounding us. A funny thing was that the glue they had put under the carpet actually had dissolved during the downpour leaking now through the carpet, which made it look like foam had been put onto it.

The row I was in turned out to be quite good to take pictures from and the biggest treat came near the end, when I was asked whether I wanted to watch the film. Of course I wanted. Thus I was let out of the fan zone right onto the carpet in the front of the Odeon to be let into the cinema. What a treat!!!

I really like the film although I think book purists will have a problem with it. I like the fact it’s coming from an emotional point of view. Of course with having so many characters it’s only natural that some of their scenes have to be cut short. Nonetheless I really enjoyed it.

Fun part was the speeches that were held before the film started. They had David Heyman and the director as well as Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson on stage. Daniel Radcliffe held an about 5 minutes long free speech without reading it off a piece of paper, totally relaxed and at ease with an audience in front of him, while Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were nervously looking at each other in the background. Thus it came to be that Rupert actually didn’t utter a word while Emma apologised for not having anything prepared like Daniel had. It was a really cute situation.

Now, being back home after all the excitement the 24 hour outside drenched stay finally takes its toll. I am having a cold from hell but guess what the next Harry Potter premiere will see me again.
